LHE Pride

June is Pride Month! We celebrate LGBTQ+ staff, students, and families in the LHE community.

As Principal Berkenwald has recently communicated, in the month of June, LHE classes have been talking about gender roles, gender expression, and gender identity.  Some of our LHE students are nonbinary (do not identify as only male or female) and use they/them pronouns.  We want to emphasize the necessity of correctly gendering students, as well as the hurt that can be caused by labeling groups of students as “boys and girls.”

Recommended books for adults about gender identity and the history of the movement for LGBTQ+ equality:

  • How to They/Them by Stuart Getty

  • Beyond the Gender Binary by Alok Vaid-Menan

  • Pride: The Story of the LGBTQ Equality Movement by Matthew Todd

Recommended books for kids about gender identity:

  • Jamie is Jamie by Afsaneh Moradian

  • It Feels Good to Be Yourself by Theresa Thorn

  • Julian is a Mermaid by Jessica Love

  • Who Are You: The Kid’s Guide to Gender Identity by Brook Pessin-Whedbee

  • What’s Your Pronoun? Beyond He & She by Dennis Baron

Also, to see the lessons that the LHE teachers have presented this month, please see the Seattle School District's K-5 Gender Books, Lessons, and Videos.  Another site for learning about gender identity and how to help all members of our community feel visible and valued is www.genderspectrum.org.
